Question:
I will say that I agree with the premise of your website, but who is really behind this operation? Honestly your website is way too “slick”, way too professional and you cannot be just a grass roots organization, who are you anyway? Who supports you, who funds you? I fear something is not right! Submitted from Randy, Dallas Texas
Ouch! First of all, thank for agreeing with our cause and we will pass along your complements to our IT team. MyOneVote.Com was once just a one person project founded to fight the apathy found in our nation today. One student, one Apple Computer, One Website Tool-Builder Kit. There is a long answer to your question, it can be found on almost any main page, look for the link, The People of MyOneVote.Com. But to assure you, MyOneVote.Com today is a bunch of talented people who all believe in this idea. Started as a college students call to action to the political apathy of those in his class, MyOneVote.Com has grown to where it is today, and continues to grow until we change this nation. In terms of funding, we are not affiliated with any business, corporation, political action committee, and or organization of any type, nor do we receive funding from anyone outside of our company. However we do sell products and ads on our site, accept small donations (our maximum donation is $250) to help pay for this website, but we are who we say we are.
Question:
But Peter, what is it that you are actually trying to do? Submitted from “My Mom”, Idyllwild, California
Mom, let me ask you this... When was the last time you were actually excited about voting? When was the last time there was at least one candidate that made you think or really stirred your emotions?
MyOneVote.Com believes that the biggest problem we face today as a nation is not the actual issues we all fight about, but the way we go about solving them. As we become more and more divided as a nation, there is little room in the middle for any discussion, and almost all of us live in the middle. The radical right and left no longer represent the views of the majority, who are left with few good choices when voting. This only creates apathy.
In my life, I find always voting for the “least objectionable” candidate really frustrating. When professional politicians run the country, we end up where we are today, in a complete mess. Congress is failing, we all agree. But then why not do something about it? By allowing professional lifetime career minded politicians to run the country, we get what we have today, failure! When we had people who served for a term or two, then went home (our founding fathers), we had good and effective government.
Only when the title professional politician is replaced by the selfless honor of temporary service, when those in Congress only stay for a term or two, then and ONLY THEN will we have functional government. Only then the voices of the people will be heard, then we can deal with the real issues of our nation. But until we do away with professional lifetime politicians, all we will have is, well, professional politicians whose greatest priority is themselves and their reelection. That is why we are in the mess today. Get rid of professional politicians, every last one of them. Special interest money would have little effect if people in Congress did not need the funds for political survival. Good government happens when those elected listen to the people, not the checkbooks of the special interests.
Question:
I agree that most in Congress need to be removed. But I like my own congressman. Persuade me that my congressional representative needs to go even when I agree with his policies. Submitted from June, San Diego, California
A heartfelt question, indeed. We are sure you will agree, that apathy is a huge problem in our nation today. Apathy kills the spirit and hope of the governed, and in a democracy or republic (our form of government) without the people's involvement by exercising our right to vote, our government no longer represents the masses. An apathetic people simply give up on our government, don’t vote, become distant, and allow a few to determine our nation's future. A government that does not accurately represent its people leads to the conflict we find ourselves in today and only breeds more apathy from the people. It is a cycle, and until we break this cycle, we are doomed to a future that has little hope. Our simple and focused belief is that no member of congress is dealing with the source of the problem, only the partisan political issues that we feel are symptomatic of the real issues. Until this changes, we as a nation will continue our destructive and divisive path we find ourselves on today. It is the professional politician that is so out of touch with the people that causes our problems today. Long term politicians from both the Democratic and Republican parties are the real problem. We would suggest that as a people, we fix the source of the problem (career politicians) and not just fight over the symptoms (politics). Remove them all from office and common sense will prevail.
Question:
If the Presidential elections were to be held today, who would you vote for? Who did you vote for in the last election? Name withheld per senders request
We do not mean to sound like a broken record, but our only issue at MyOneVote.Com is voting out all professional politicians serving in the 111th Congress. As we are only focused on Congress, and as we take no political positions, plus there is no presidential election in 2010, this is a non-issue with us. As for who I voted for in the last election, again that is not important because our cause is nonpartisan. But I will tell you it was not either of the main candidates.
