We need our lawmakers to voluntarily not seek reelection after some years of service, simply put, self directed term limits. If they do not comply, we the American public need to force them out of office and rotate new representatives into office. Self serving elected officials will never create, pass, or enforce a law that limits their time in office. Politicians first priority is to themselves, and their re-election. Term limits will never become Federal Law, it is We The People who must vote out long serving incumbents.
If we performed as poorly in our jobs as they do in theirs, we would be fired. There can be no arguing that. Why do we allow them to fail us and our country when we would be fired for doing the same? Most of the country agrees with this principle, Congress is failing the American people, almost all Americans agree on that too. Then why do we not hold those responsible to task? Regardless of party affiliation, they all have to go! Their time has long since passed. It is time for us, the American people, to remove them all out of office! The same would apply in our own lives, why not theirs?
However there is no helping that, it is human nature. No wonder they don’t leave, and vote for themselves pay raises, increased privilege, why not? When we were kids, we did not see the reality of life until we entered the “real world” and the same principle applies to those serving too long in Washington DC, or state capitals, or at local levels for that matter. If you serve outside of the “real world” for too long, you will eventually loose the reality of those you serve. This is only human nature. We are not being unkind, it is just the reality of human nature. Only through the complete rotation of our elected officials will we keep those in office in our reality zone and better able to serve us.
This idea is not as radical as it seems, it is the right thing to do, and is practical. Those seeking life long employment as elected officials leads to the expectation of those special privileges today most of them take for granted. Do you have a private parking space at the airport? Do you grant yourself pay raises? Do you treat those you serve as being below you? How would you basically like to work only 3 days per week? If something is broken, replace it. It is that simple, just vote them all out. They no longer live life in our reality.
Some people may think that we are being unfair or cruel. But in all fairness, if you live your life in a world free from reality long enough, there is no way you will see the reality of those you are supposed to represent. It is not really their fault, but after years in Washington DC, with all the money offered them, all the special privileges, free trips, unrealistic benefits and insurance packages, franking privileges, the mindset of superiority gradually sets in. If those in service mandate or require laws on us, that they disallow for themselves, democracy is soon to be lost. When the governing elect for themselves different laws than we are forced to live under, well, that is just not American.
It is time to just start over! Vote them all out in 2010!
